GERARD BELLAART
Born 10.IV.1946 Dordrecht, The Netherlands. Studied painting, drawing & print making at the Willem de Kooning Academy of Fine Arts Rotterdam, The Hague Free Academy & the Royal Academy, Antwerp.
BRIEF CHRONOLOGY
Travelled extensively and lived in Greece, Switzerland, Germany and Australia before settling in England in 1967. Has been living and working in France since 2004.
On the isle of Hydra an early interest in contemporary Amercian literature was inspired through contact with Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Leonard Cohen and Harold Norse. Subsequent correspondence with Charles Bukowski, Ginsberg & others lead to the foundation of Cold Turkey Press.
Editor/publisher of Cold Turkey Press 1970-1975. First limited editions in English and Dutch of poetry and prose by Garcia Lorca, Cesar Valejo, Blaise Cendrars, Ezra Pound, William Burroughs, Charles Bukowski, Allen Ginsberg, Sinclair Beiles, Heathcote Williams and many others.
Concurrently with working as an artist, remains active as a translator and editor of literary productions; publishes and designs books and manuals and lectures regularly.

There is no need for art to be democratic, social, socialist or popular. The idea of being known repels me. I value my obscurity, I have turned it into a trait. I possess only one quality; an ideal suspicion of the public.
